Syntactic properties of male courtship song in the lesser short-tailed bat, Mystacina tuberculata

چکیده

Bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) have sophisticated acoustic abilities adapted to many uses, including both echolocation and social vocalisations. Social vocalisations are used in a wide variety of contexts vary greatly arrangement complexity. Among the most intricate courtship songs that males certain species use attract mates advertise their qualities. To date, however, few studies examined phonological construction bat or made detailed assessment syntax combine different song elements. Here, we examine syntactic New Zealand lesser short-tailed bat, Mystacina tuberculata , highly vocal, lek-breeding with exceptionally high song-output rates. We hypothesised this is hierarchical non-random, demonstrates degree individual variation, potentially allowing for recognition. recorded nine male bats manual classification components structure. The New Zealand short-tailed bat Mystacina tuberculata

(Chiroptera: Mystacinidae) has been of great interest to biologists (see Lloyd, 2001 for a review). It is one of only two extant indigenous mammals in New Zealand, the other being the long-tailed bat Chalinolobus tuberculatus (O’Donnell, 2001). It therefore evolved in the absence of small terrestrial mammals and, until recent introductions of predators by humans, may have been exposed to few pr...

The effect of recording situation on the echolocation calls of the New Zealand lesser short-tailed bat (Mystacina tuberculata Gray)

Using a broad-band recording system (150 Hz-100 kHz) the echolocation calls of the lesser short-tailed bat (Mystacina tuberculata) were recorded under three very different situations: freeflying, flying within a flight cage, and on release from the hand. Calls of bats landing and feeding on a platform in Wellington Zoo were also recorded. Both the lowest frequency and frequency of peak amplitud...

Echolocation call production during aerial and terrestrial locomotion by New Zealand's enigmatic lesser short-tailed bat, Mystacina tuberculata.

Linkage of echolocation call production with contraction of flight muscles has been suggested to reduce the energetic cost of flight with echolocation, such that the overall cost is approximately equal to that of flight alone. However, the pattern of call production with limb movement in terrestrially agile bats has never been investigated. We used synchronised high-speed video and audio record...

Discovery of novel virus sequences in an isolated and threatened bat species, the New Zealand lesser short-tailed bat (Mystacina tuberculata)

Bats harbour a diverse array of viruses, including significant human pathogens. Extensive metagenomic studies of material from bats, in particular guano, have revealed a large number of novel or divergent viral taxa that were previously unknown. New Zealand has only two extant indigenous terrestrial mammals, which are both bats, Mystacina tuberculata (the lesser short-tailed bat) and Chalinolob...

Terrestrial locomotion of the New Zealand short-tailed bat Mystacina tuberculata and the common vampire bat Desmodus rotundus.

Bats (Chiroptera) are generally awkward crawlers, but the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) and the New Zealand short-tailed bat (Mystacina tuberculata) have independently evolved the ability to manoeuvre well on the ground. In this study we describe the kinematics of locomotion in both species, and the kinetics of locomotion in M. tuberculata. We sought to determine whether these bats mov...
